Welcome to South Church’s Sunday School. Our children’s faith formation program is rooted in God’s love and compassion for all; everyone belongs. We base our classes on the social and spiritual needs of the children and use the “Seasons of the Spirit” curriculum as a resource and guide.
What does that look like?
Children begin Sunday mornings in the sanctuary, included as a vital part of our congregation, and participate in greeting, hymns, passing of the peace, and a brief “Word for All God’s Children.” Most Sundays, children then join their teachers for time in the classrooms. Here children listen to music, have an opening prayer, create a holy space for exploring the theme of the day, and then participate in conversation and age appropriate activities. These can include art, cooking, and music making. Children are not separated by age or grade, but instead work, learn and play together in the spirit of Christian unity. On Communion Sunday children are brought back into the sanctuary to receive communion and participate in this sacrament where all are invited to an abundant feast.
On the fourth Sunday of each month we have a completely intergenerational worship service in which children can participate more deeply and actively in the liturgy, in the many worship leader roles, in the music ministry or in the pews.
We strive to create an environment that meets children where they are and allows them to enter into worship and faith formation as full-fledged members of our faith community and in ways that encourage them to discover their own unique giftedness as members of the body of Christ.
